AS/RS Systems

High-density, fast and error-free warehouse operations with automated storage and retrieval (AS/RS) systems.

What Are AS/RS (Automated Storage) Systems?

AS/RS (Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems) are computer-controlled, unmanned smart storage systems that automatically place products on high-level racks and, when needed, retrieve them from those racks and route them to the relevant stations. Making maximum use of the facility's height, these systems consist of huge steel rack structures, stacker cranes or shuttles moving between aisles, and Warehouse Management/Control (WMS/WCS) software that orchestrates all this equipment.

What Are the Key Advantages?

The most striking advantage is that it provides up to 85% space savings compared with traditional storage. By eliminating the wide aisles needed for people and forklifts to maneuver, it uses the facility's vertical (cubic) volume at maximum capacity. On the operational side, it reduces human-caused errors (wrong picks, miscounts, product damage) entirely to zero. Thanks to its ability to operate uninterrupted and at high speed 24/7 in lights-out, unmanned environments (dark warehouse), it dramatically shortens order-fulfillment times and delivers flawless inventory accuracy.

In Which Sectors and Applications Is It Used?

It is the heart of the operation in any sector with vast product volumes, high variety (SKUs) and fast order cycles. It plays a key role (as Mini-Load systems) in e-commerce distribution centers and automotive spare-parts warehouses where thousands of different products must be found and dispatched instantly. It has also become a standard industry requirement (as Unit-Load systems) in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector that manages pallets weighing tons, and especially in sub-zero cold-storage warehouses where long human working hours are risky and costly.

What Should You Consider When Investing?

AS/RS systems are large-scale engineering investments that are hard to reverse. First, the right technology must be chosen according to the structure of the product to be stored: "Unit-Load" for heavy pallets, and "Mini-Load" or shuttle systems for lighter tote- or carton-based products. The facility's floor load capacity and, especially in earthquake zones, the structural strength of the high-level steel construction must be calculated very carefully. In addition, the system's mechanical speed (cycles per hour) must be designed to handle the operational load during the business's peak periods, and powerful software that can integrate seamlessly with existing ERP systems should be preferred.

Why ACS Intralogistics Solutions?

As ACS Intralogistics Solutions, we transform your warehouse from a static area where products simply wait into a fast-working, smart and autonomous "order-production center."

We engineer AS/RS systems not as an isolated rack structure but as the heart of your entire facility's intralogistics ecosystem. We integrate your products, which descend autonomously from height, directly into our conveyor lines, sorter systems, ergonomic goods-to-person picking stations and AGV/AMR fleets. With the software architecture we develop, we optimize every square meter and every second of your warehouse, delivering end-to-end turnkey AS/RS solutions that revolutionize your speed, space and labor costs.
